Camera obscura, which began to be used widely since the 16th century, offers at least two models for the understanding of the technological rendering of the world-as-image: a scientific and drawing tool for representations, and a popular lens-based medium that predated photography and cinema.
On the very first viewing, the works in the program Camera obscura seem to belong to two opposite trends or traditions of audiovisual making. On the one hand, works such as Number one, Candle, Drawing Wishes, Notes on shadows and stains shared a kind of lens-based poetics which hints on the observational, the everyday and the subjective. On the other hand, Zuruckbleiben bitte, Scape_time, Int.16/45//son01/30x1, CEC 1511 L can be broadly categorized under the emerging field of digital sound-images that utilize algorithms to explore abstract geometry and nonrepresentational imageries.
However, despite their seemingly polarized audiovisual styles and distinct techniques of production, I believe a parallel concern is expressed and shared among the works. In all the works, the audiovisual sentience is not a given but rather a fluid process that demands the audience’s active perceptual participation. The viewing is a co-creative and reflective process. Admittedly, all viewings require audience’s various degree of perceptual engagement (or else we will perceive nothing at all). But this series of works is particularly marked by a subtle and exquisite play on our threshold/margins of perception. If I am allowed to use a somewhat obscure (if not entirely too metaphysical) way to express and summarize this common denominator, I believe all the works suggest a pursuit of the audiovisual sublime by provoking our senses with a simple question: What am I perceiving right now? |
