Artistic and ephemeral actions in public space are not new in western contemporary art world. Since the 70s in the 'plastic' arts and the 90s in media art, artists 'hacked' the real or virtual public space with evenly various artistic interventions. The debate 'Hacking Public Space: searching for past, present and future conditions?' does not claim to be an extensive art historical overview about artistic flash mobbing. This debate attempts to point out possible differences or similarities in approaching such actions by contemporary media artists in respect to their past, present and even future spatial and content conditions. This debate will also expose possible intercultural similarities or differences by mutually looking at the Belgian and Hong Kong version of the project 'Electrified II: Hacking Public Space', both presented at the Project Room Exhibition, Exhibition Hall, Hong Kong Film Archive, Microwave International New Media Arts Festival 2010.
